San Diego Zoo

An old Children’s Zoo was demolished and an entirely new Children’s Educational Play area has taken its place with both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Indoors exhibits feature amphibians, insects, Komodo Dragons and hummingbirds. Exterior exhibits include squirrel monkeys, coatis, crocks, turtles, owls and prairie dogs. There are four different environments: desert, tropical, marsh and woodlands. Laced into the animal exhibits are opportunities for parallel play — climbing; running; jumping; hiding in a tree house; clamoring over bridges; crawling under logs; and running through slot stone canyons like the animals. Loads of water play also attract children of all ages. This exhibit provides a fresh opportunity for an authentic exploration of nature that intrigues and delights children. The San Diego Zoo’s new Wildlife Explorer’s Base Camp is a three-acre tapestry of diverse habitats that transports young visitors to a land that is rich in adventure, dramatic, and playful, offering a multitude of opportunities to explore nature at their own pace.
