San Diego Zoo
Working in conjunction with La Brea, The San Diego Natural History Museum and The Western Center for Archaeology & Paleontology—The San Diego Zoo is launching an entirely new venture. This new habitat will showcase Southern California’s amazing history of the Pleistocene era. 40 Mega species were lost—we have theories as to why but no concrete answers.
Beginning in a tar pit, visitors will learn what used to roam in Southern California. We’ll compare them to living ancestors or to similar species. We’ll introduce visitors to the playfulness of elephants and how the Zoo cares for them. We’ll explain why people don’t want an elephant in their back yards and why they’re so threatened with territories diminishing and ivories hunted. We’ll showcase the Zoo’s conservation programs and successes and we’ll invite visitors to interact in a setting of history and conservation. DPA is assisting with the master planning and design of all the interpretive elements that will help educate visitors throughout this exhibit.
La Brea is providing evidence to help create a clear picture of Southern California’s rich history
