Saint Andrew’s Church
DPA designed a new columbarium garden for Saint Andrew by the Sea in Mission Viejo, California. This garden was set off to the side of the sanctuary, it has wonderful ocean views and is a very private area for quiet reflection of lost loved ones. The gate, also designed by DPA, not only reflects the existing cross in the background, but it also matches the architectural style of the church as well as serving a very important ceremonial purpose. There are several types of burial ceremonies performed here from being placed in a niche to raking ashes into sand. The sand ceremony area was designed as a long linear rectangle. Incorporated into the gates are ceremonial rakes that not only honor the religion but also are disguised within the overall gate design for those not partaking in this tradition. These custom rakes fit the ceremonial area perfectly.
