Fire Station 29

For the fire station 29 public art project, I had the opportunity to work closely with the fire department. A fantastic collaboration.  To find inspiration for the final deign, we searched through archives and albums and eventually found an image the fire chief said was the best representation of firefighters in action.  Once the image was selected, I worked closely with the architect, we decided that the art piece could replace a portion of the proposed frontage wall and utilize cor-ten steel – material selected by the architect used throughout the project.  Eventually resulting was a 5 ½ foot tall stencil-cut firefighter sculpture, constructed of 2 sheets of 1 inch thick steel the “water” shooting from the hoses is made of laminated sheets of glass which are illuminated at night.  We hope the art piece will have an artistic impact on the community, and also hope it helps to showcase the crucial role firefighters have in the continuing safety of San Die

Fire Station 12

DPA was involved with 2 major components in the design of this new fire station – the landscape architecture as well as the public art.  Our public art piece incorporated the signage into a sculptural roof canopy portraying a group of 4 ½ foot tall Fire Fighters around their rescue net.  Within there net are giant red-anodized aluminum letters signifying the stations number, “twelve”.  There are lots of challenges when it come to designing the landscape for fire stations in San Diego, from city ordinances requiring lots of street trees, to total visibility for the emerging engines, to parking and ADA requirements on a tightly sloped site.  Our street trees are now a row of marching custom designed decorative pots with firecracker plants.
